Liberals and Progressives
I invite you to Liberals and Progressives, as I'm rolling this group into that group. It's livelier there, and redundant here, anyway. Here's the link: view link It's just a click away.
I'm also going to cull the membership to those that have visited relatively recently, say, two months, just to be polite.
Thank you.

Is it possible
that McCain picked Palin to set off a fire storm of disapproval? When I read Salon this morning, more than 270 people had weighed in on her and -- surprisingly, because I thought the marionettes would be there with their jerked strings -- most of the letters I sampled expressed disapproval.
So, would Palin be forced to bow out? This might open the door to an equally (in another way, of course) fear-generating and unacceptable veep candidate: Willard "Mitt" Romney. There would then be a backlash against the forces that caused Palin to retreat to her regular round of wolf-killing, snowmobiling and target practice, making her -- and, by reflection, McCain -- a figure of sympathy.
Or, would McCain retain this ultimate rightie? Palin then symbolizes just who McCain really is: an anti-environmentalist, irresponsible, womanizing conservative.

I seem to have fallen off the membership of this
group.
Anyway, I am appalled by the Governor of Alaska.

New to Eons
Hi Everybody
I am new to Eons, and new to liberalism in general. It all started when I read 'Fast Food Nation' last year, and one thing led to another, and then a friend suggested that I read The Nation. Suddenly I realized that although I had been a centrist most of my life, the politics here in the US have changed so far to the right that I am now finding myself squarely on the left. I am liking The Nation -- is anyone else reading it? There are so many topics to explore. Government de-regulation, commercialization, and Reaganomics have all led to a homogenized media, corporate greed that is bankrupting our children and grandchildren, un-necessary wars overseas in the name of oil, a systematic failure to develop sound energy policy (Ford motor company is just now changing their assembly lines from trucks and SUVs to smaller more fuel-efficient cars? 30 years later???), and a noticeable change in climate (forget the polar caps -- is anyone else out there noticing the changes at home?). I would love to hear what others in this group think.

Obama: Pledge of Allegiance
Hi People, I just learned that Obama had refused to say the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag. I missed that incident when it happened. Can someone, please, tell me what Obama gave as reason for his refusal?

Today in Washington The second Edition of the longest Walk arrives in Washington.
There will be a large rally tomorrow in support of it.
check view link
Also here the wonderful interview with AIM leader Dennis Banks on view link
on today's broadcast. Links can be found there to more info.
The interview starts about 30 minutes into the podcast
The walk is to look at the protection of sacred sites and the environment and both the gains and losses in American native Affairs over the last 30 years.
In Northern America we flip out of out flags are desecrated or in Canada if the theme to the hockey broadcast is change.
Surely we can pay heed to the destruction of sacred Mother Earth and sacred lands.
In the singing words of Pete Seeger..when it comes to the treatment of native persons we are

Petition to Stop Torture
Dear Travis,
Last Saturday, George Bush announced that he vetoed the Intelligence Authorization Bill, thereby sending a message to the rest of the world that he supports torture, even after Congress rejected practices such as water boarding.
I want to thank the tens of thousands of you who signed our petition taking a stand against torture. It is still vital that as many people as possible take this stand as Congress goes back to work on the Intelligence Authorization Bill.
If you've already signed, please ask your friends and family to do so. If you haven't signed, speak out against torture now by visiting:

George Bush has once again compromised the moral leadership of our nation. By vetoing a bill establishing a single, government-wide interrogation standard, the President has substituted his own judgment for that of the vast majority of military and foreign policy experts -- including Gen. David Petraeus, the U.S. commander in Iraq -- who all agree that torture is simply counterproductive.
Ironically, George Bush has warned against ignoring the advice of our commanders in Iraq -- while at the same time ignoring the Army Field Manual's determination that horrific tactics such as water boarding elicit unreliable information, put U.S. troops at risk and undermine our counterinsurgency efforts.
Take a stand against torture today by visiting:

With your help, we will continue working to reverse the damage President Bush has caused to our standing in the world.
Thank you,
Harry Reid

Aarrrgghh! McCain on the environment

According to many special interest groups, McCain's record on the environment is nil. Now, according to the NYT, he is touting himself as an environmentalist.
