When I sit down at the end of the day

and relax completely and can truthfully say

that I took a moment to help my brother

or by a word brought comfort to another,

then I feel good and my serenity runs deep

and upon retiring, I go gently to sleep.

But if I, when the sun goes down

sit dejectedly with a selfish frown,

and recall not doing one good deed

or helping someone sorely in need,

then it is I who must bear the cost

in self-condemnation for opportunity lost.

"The Summer of the Monkeys", Wilson Rawls, he won the "Literary Guild Award" for this fantastic story.. I read it to my granddaughters. & "The Flame and the Flower" by Kathleen Woodiwiss. Awesome book.
